California wildfires rage overnight, consuming more than 22,000 acres since Monday.
The blaze began 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the San Jacinto Mountains and has forced thousands of local residents to evacuate.
No injuries have been reported.
On Thursday firefighters made progress in reinforcing a defensive line between the flames and the resort community of Idyllwild.
The fire has reached four miles from Palm Springs, though no evacuation order has been given for the city of 46,000.
Nearly 3,000 firefighters, 17 helicopters and 10 air tankers have been assigned to battle the blaze.
The wildfire is one of the most severe of about 16 that crews are trying to contain in several western states.
