Gary Goldsmith, the uncle of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, says he has a "gut feeling" the eagerly awaited royal baby will be a girl.

Prince William and his wife Catherine, who is popularly known as Kate, are expecting their first child in mid-July who, upon entering the world, will become third in line to the British throne.

Gary Goldsmith said on Wednesday (July 17) he hoped the baby would be a girl so that her birth would be a "first in history."

"I think it is a girl, but nobody knows for sure. I'd like it to be girl, because it will be a first in history."

If Prince William and Kate have a daughter she will officially hold the title of princess, updating rules introduced almost a century ago.

Goldsmith said nobody knew the gender of the baby, but that there were many girls on the Middleton side of the family.

"It is a gut feeling, but on my side of the family there were lots of girls."
