A bill, known as the Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act, has been introduced to the United States Congress that would designate the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Site as a National Historical Park.

It will also include all of the areas where astronauts or NASA instruments touched the surface of the moon during the time between 1969 and 1972.
The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 says “Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
If the bill passes, the leaders from the Department of the Interior and NASA would have to submit the lunar landing site to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization for consideration as a World Heritage Site.
And once approved for the National Historical Park designation, the secretary of the interior as the administrator would work with NASA to make sure that certain responsibilities are attended to, like managing who can access the park, and making an accurate catalogue of the items that are present in the area.
