ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
The beautiful game turned ugly in Buenos Aires province on Friday (June 28) when football fans of the embattled Independiente soccer team turned on a club president, forcing him and team officials to flee the scene.
Tempers boiled over just minutes into a club meeting which saw football fans greet Independiente President Javier Cantero on the receiving end of insults, chants and hurled chairs as he took to the stage for a club address.
The protests continued outside the club afterwards.
Fans called for Cantero's resignation after a poor showing in Argentina's premier football tournament saw the once mighty side downgraded to the country's B-division league.
Founded at the turn of the 20th century, Club Independiente was once considered one of Argentina's big five football clubs but budgets cuts and the loss of star players has relegated Independiente's glory days to a distant memory.
