The Navy recently detonated a large mine-like device just off the coast of Bay Head, New Jersey.
Prior to the dangerous operation, roughly 15 homes in the local area were evacuated. Boats were also kept away.
Thought to be either a moored or a contact mine, Navy authorities believe it’s from either World War I or World War II. A swimmer had noticed the device, which was mostly buried in the sand underneath the water.
A disposal team examined it immediately and decided the only safe bet was to detonate during high tide. It was about 100 feet from the shore in a little over 10 feet of water.
A Navy spokesperson stated “It's believed this is a one-of-a-kind event, and there do not appear to be any other devices in the area."
There were no injuries resulting from the detonation.
The good-sized device reportedly weighed several hundred pounds. A portion of it will be sent for analysis in an attempt to determine the origin.
