Gay rights ruling celebrated in California

Cheers for same-sex marriage echoed throughout California on Wednesday.

With kisses and tears of joy, gays and lesbians celebrated the historic Supreme Court decision in support of same-sex marriage.

More than 1,000 people attended this rally in West Hollywood proudly waving the movement's trademark rainbow flag.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MANUEL BENEVIDES, SAYING:

"I'm a 50 year old gay man, so this is huge for me, never in a million years would I have imagined this, that I would live to see this."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CAROLINE CARTER, ENGAGED TO COLE DALTON, SAYING:

"It's difficult, I think, not having society or your state validate that you love someone and want to marry them, no it really feels defeating a lot of the times."

The U.S. Supreme Court's landmark ruling forced the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages in states where it is legal.

The ruling cleared the way for same-sex marriages in California.
