Summer presents its own set of dangers for dogs.

Sadly, a 3-year-old police dog named Spartacus has passed away from heat stroke. He was found dead inside of the patrol car belonging to his handler.

The car had been parked at the handler’s home when the dog died. According to a police spokesperson “After the retirement of his first police K-9, who is now a family pet living with the K-9 handler, the handler is devastated by the loss of his second police K-9.”

Spartacus had several duties within the department. He was trained in tracking, illegal drug detection and suspect apprehension. A memorial service for Spartacus will be scheduled in the future, but no date has been set.

Little details were released about the handler of Spartacus. His name was not made public, however he is said to be a 9-year veteran of the department, 7 of which he worked as a K-9 handler.

He has been placed on administrative leave with pay while investigations into the dog’s death are conducted.
