Zuma says Mandela serious but improving

South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed on Sunday that Nelson Mandela's health was improving, as the anti-apartheid leader received a Father's Day visit in hospital from his daughter Makaziwe.

Speaking at a rally to mark National Youth Day, South African President Jacob Zuma, using Mandela's clan name "Madiba", asked people to keep the ailing 94-year old in their thoughts, saying Mandela "continues to get better."

"As you are aware, President Nelson Mandela is still in hospital in Pretoria. We must remember that he is one of those that played his part, and delivered freedom, perhaps played the most prominent part. We are grateful that he continues to get better. I invite you to join me today, in wishing Madiba a very happy Father's Day today."
