Police raid on Taksim Square provokes more anger

Istanbul awakes to early morning confrontation.

The numbers of security forces and protesters have grown following an overnight police raid on Gezi Park and Taksim Square.

The police crackdown and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's ultimatum to clear the area ahead of a ruling party rally has drawn more demonstrators to the streets.

One man said he walked nearly 10 hours from the Asian side of the city to reach the area of central Istanbul that was attacked by security forces.

Another protester who is a doctor said many were injured in the raid.

(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER AND DOCTOR, SAYING:

"If you go down on the street you will see hundreds of wounded people. There is nobody to take care of them and there is no medical equipment."

The area is at the centre of two weeks of protests that started peacefully but erupted into a widespread show of anger against Erdogan's government.
