Deutsche Bahn has been granted permission by British and French authorities to operate passenger trains through the channel tunnel.
Direct train services between London and Frankfurt are set to be launched in 2016.
The German rail firm joins channel-operator Eurostar, which is majority owned by France's SNCF.
