According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (1,5,1) the proper hand washing protocol is to wet your hands, and then use soap, creating lather for 15 to 20 seconds before rinsing and drying your hands.
Researchers from Michigan State University observed the handwashing habits of around 37 hundred people in public bathrooms. They found that 15% of men didn't wash their hands at all and on the women's side, 7% skipped it.
Half of men just rinsed their hands without using soap compared with 79 percent of women who used soap.
An associate professor of hospitality business at MSU, and the lead investigator on the study said: “These findings were surprising to us because past research suggested that proper hand washing is occurring at a much higher rate.”
People not properly washing their hands reportedly causes around half of food borne illness.
