Many people long for the good old days, when local neighborhood stores lined public streets. One such store in Washington, DC opened its doors 93 years ago.
Frager's Hardware located on Pennsylvania Avenue opened in the year 1920. Tragically, the establishment was badly damaged in a fire recently.
While the cause of the huge fire remains under investigation, one of the shop’s owners claimed the blaze originated in the lumber section. The mayor of the district, Vincent Gray stated “It's just sickening to have to look at this hardware store, which is really a staple on Capitol Hill, and see what this fire has done to devastate what I call an institution.”
More than 200 firefighters were sent to the scene to control the blaze. Traffic in the nearby area was halted as clouds of dark, heavy smoke billowed into the air.
It took nearly three hours to suppress the flames. Fortunately no one was hurt.
The building is thought of as a landmark in the Capital Hill neighborhood. And the general manager plans to rebuild the iconic hardware shop.
