Explosions and gunfire ring out as insurgents attack Afghanistan's main international airport.

Police said Monday's pre-dawn assault on the airport at Kabul appeared to focus on the military side of the site.

There've been no immediate reports of casualties.

Nor was it immediately clear who was behind the attack.

Local witnesses described the scene.

"Some suicide attackers are positioned next to a pump station and the fighting is going on. We hope the Afghan forces will kill them soon."

Attacks on the airport are relatively rare.

It's used by civilians and the military including NATO-led forces.

The assault began at about 4.30 in the morning.

Gunfire and explosions could still be heard at least an hour later.
