Feminist groups take to the streets in Turkey joining thousands who defied the government call to end the protests.

They march through Istanbul, many holding signs and banners.

What they want is equality.

(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) UNNAMED PROTESTER SAYING:

"We took to the streets to stand against the male mentality that is striving to imprison us at home. We are struggling to live equally and walk freely in the streets and parks."

Thousands demonstrated despite Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's demand for an immediate end to protests that have spawned the most violent riots of his decade in power.

The demonstrations began as a campaign against the redevelopment of a park and has since spiraled into an unprecedented display of public anger over the government.
