U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday chose his close confidante, Susan Rice, as his new national security adviser, in a move that increases White House control over U.S. foreign policy.

"I am extraordinarily proud to announce my new national security adviser, our outstanding adviser to the United Nations, Susan Rice..."
Her appointment also defies Republicans, who criticized Rice's handling of last year's deadly attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, and all but derailed her nomination for Secretary of State.
This time, Obama avoids a congressional fight over Rice, because the post of national security advisor doesn't require Senate confirmation.
