The SPCA in New Zealand is threatening to take legal action against an Auckland man, Gavin Wilkinson. He recently sold the skin of a cat during an online auction on the website called TradeMe. Wilkinson says that the feline was killing birds on his property.

The SPCA and avid cat lovers are in an uproar over the shooting. It is being alleged that Wilkinson may have killed the cat in an inhumane way.

It is currently believed that the feline was a stray and that aspect protects the creature under the country’s Animal Welfare Act. If the cat was indeed a wanderer, that means Wilkinson could face charges in court.

The SPCA is currently investigating the case. Wilkinson steadfastly defends the shooting. He stated “I find there's a lot of ignorance in people, with cats, they don't actually realise what sort of damage they do.”

In a study released in 2011, University of Nebraska researchers found "that feral cats were responsible for the extinction of 33 species of birds worldwide."
