An earthquake hit Taiwan Sunday, causing road crashes and damaging property.
The 6.2 magnitude quake struck 38 km southeast of T'ai-chung city.
At least one person is dead and 20 are injured, according to the National Fire Agency.
Another person was reported missing.
Taiwanese television said the quake triggered a gas explosion in the centre of the islandbut did not offer any further details.
It also rattled the capital Taipei.
The island sits near the so-called ring of fire region of seismic activity around the Pacific Ocean.
