Measles kills scores of children in Pakistan

A six month old girl is hospitalized for measles in pakistan.

Her mother tries to offer the comfort that she can.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) NOOR BIBI, WHOSE 6-MONTHS-OLD DAUGHTER IS SUFFERING FROM MEASLES, SAYING:

"She had temperature; then the measles rashes started appearing on her skin. I kept taking her for check-ups but she did not get well. So I have brought her here. Now she is getting treatment."

It is an increasingly common story in the Punjab province of the country. More than 14,000 cases have been reported. Out of these 120 children have died.

The number of cases grow by the day,

Some blame the government for failing to take pre-emptive measures on time.

They say four months after the measles surfaced in Punjab, the Health Department has yet to launch an immunization campaign in districts outside the capital city Lahore. They say the Health Department has only been able buy seven million vaccines, whereas 30 million are needed.
