The sentencing of a former nurse who admitted he started a fire at the nursing home where he worked began in Sydney Australia.
Roger Dean, seen here during a taped confession, explained to police that he used a lighter to set fire to one of the beds in November of 2011.
The fire quickly spread-- smoke filled the corridors as workers rushed to evacuate the residents. 11 people were killed in the incident.
Dean, who reportedly told police that he loved the residents, also said he had been compelled to light the fire by Satan.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER NURSE ROGER DEAN SAYING:
"I just felt evil, that I'm just corrupted with evil thoughts that have made me do that."
Dean has pleaded guilty to 11 counts of murder.
The trial is expected to last for several weeks.
