STORY: Former Chilean President and current presidential candidate Michelle Bachelet was spit in the face by a university student as she greeted supporters at a political rally on Tuesday.
Bachelet, who leads in polls ahead of the November elections, said she would not be intimidated by such tactics.
The incident occurred during an election rally in the northern city of Arica.
As the candidate was shaking hands and greeting supporters at the event, a man identified as 23-year-old anthropologist student Elias Sanhueza, approached her and spit in her face.
Police apprehended Sanhueza who told journalists before he was taken away that he did not regret his actions.
A protest movement led by Chilean students began during Bachelet's 2006 - 2010 term and has greatly intensified under current President Sebastian Pinera.
The incident was quickly denounced by other Chilean politicians including Pinera, who took to Twitt
