Argentinean author and illustrator Isol received the world's biggest prize for children's literature - the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award - at a royal ceremony in Stockholm on Monday (May 26).
The author was born in Buenos Aires in 1972 and also works as a singer and composer.
The jury praised her ability to expose the absurdities of the adult world to children.
SOUNDBITE, Isol, Alma award winner, saying (English):
"I get my inspiration from what's wild, what's ridiculous, from that independence of culture that children enjoy. They are beyond our conventions, they keep asking themselves all sorts of things. That's why I choose them as my main characters."
The prize, worth almost 800,000 US dollars was introduced by the Swedish government in 2002.
