STORY: A possible tornado in central Russia ripped through a small town of Obninsk on Thursday, leaving damaged houses, cables and a wake of destroyed vehicles.

Amateur video shot in the town about 110 kilometers southwest of Moscow, showed a funnel cloud touching down in a residential area and passing close by the world's first civilian nuclear plant, built in 1954 and shuttered in 2002.

The storm left some local residents without electricity, however, no major damage was reported.

According to Russian media, the emergency ministry called the suspected tornado an "atmospheric front".
