Grooms in rural India are required to pose for a picture next to their home toilets.

What are your criteria for a life partner?

In a rural district in Central India, prospective grooms are asked to pose next to toilets in their private residences.

A legitimate photograph featuring a potty and future hubby has now become a mandatory requirement for men to register for a mass marriage ceremony.

Newly married couples living in a home with a toilet are eligible for additional governmental financial benefits and gifts.

A district collecting authority stated “With new modification, we have tried to ensure that there is no chance of fraud and wrong information from the grooms. It is precisely for this reason that we didn't only ask for providing pictures of toilets, but pictures of grooms with their toilets.”

Last year, a government official in India urged women not to marry men who had no toilet in their house. The politician noted "toilets are more important than temples."

There is a serious sanitation problem in many areas around the world.

A recent report noted that 6 billion people have access to cell phones in the world but only 4.5 billion people have available toilets.
