U.S. President Barack Obama awarded singer-songwriter Carole King the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song on Wednesday (May 22) night at the White House.
King is the first female to be handed the award since the prize was first conceived in 2007. Obama pointed to her 400 compositions that have been recorded by over 1,000 artists throughout her career.
Previous winners of the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize include Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.
The White House concert airs on PBS on May 28.
